Winemaking Notes
High Serenity Ranch is the name we give to our home ranch vineyard located on the floor and benches of the western end of High Valley. Our 2005 Merlot is primarily from our 12 and 1/2 acre Merlot block that was planted in 2001 to two different rootstocks, and to four different clones of the variety. The other contributor to the Merlot blend is from our newly planted Volcano Ridge vineyard at the foot of Round Mountain Volcano. In its second and third leaf we managed to harvest a small crop that was vinified separately, and the resulting wine was a superb addition to the overall blend.
After a 10 day fermentation the wine was pressed, and then was aged for 14 months in French, American and Hungarian oak of which 25% was new cooperage. The Monte Sereno Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot were also added to the blend prior to bottling to contribute structure and depth to the mid-palate and finish.
Tasting Notes
The vintage of 2005 was a longer, protracted season than just the year prior in 2004. An extended growing season generally translates to longer hang time for softer tannins and improved flavor profiles through additional ripening time, and the vintage of 2005 was no exception. Beautiful aromas of fresh baked cherry pie spill from the glass as compliments of vanilla and new leather add to the crescendo. There are hints of cinnamon and allspice along with an herbal element of coriander and sage. The soft tannins form a delicate framework that lead to a varietally correct finish.
