Winemaking Notes

This signature vineyard of little over two and a half acres was planted in 2001 and is located at 2,100 ft. in elevation on the western slopes of High Valley. The soils on this ridge top are primarily broken shale characteristic of Franciscan formation with al ight dusting of red volcanic soils intermixed. The depth and composition of the soil creates a microclimate that stresses the vines limiting grape yields, which translates into a wine of increased concentration and intensity of dark, ripe berry fruit characteristics.

The 2004 Monte Sereno Zinfandel was aged in French, American and Hungarian oak barrels and then blended with 5% Petite Sirah from our Volcano Ridge vineyard.

Tasting Notes

This classic Zinfandel produced from our signature Monte Sereno vineyard displays the best qualities any Zinfandel could hope to achieve. Ripe aromas of blackberry jam and stewed plums offer a rich nose with great depth and complexity. There are notes of cigar box and mint, along with subtle sweet vanilla and cedar notes from the well-integrated oak. There is a wonderful balance from beginning to end in this wine. Along the way there is a hearty body of mouthfeel with soft tannins amidst good structure.
