The wine industry is heavily regulated as to what can and cannot be printed on a label, so it is no surprise that many consumers are often confused or easily mislead by subtle nuances. There is a special designation that is often overlooked - " ESTATE BOTTLED", which is the highest classification allowed.

In summary, the term "ESTATE BOTTLED" (per the TTB) may be used by a bottling winery if:

• 100% of the wine is labeled with a Viticultural Area/Appellation
• 100% of the bottling winery is located in the labeled Appellation
• Grew 100% of the grapes used to make wine on land 'owned' or 'controlled' by bottling winery within boundaries of Appellation
• Crushed, fermented must, finished, aged and bottled in a continuous process (the wine at no time left the premise of the bottling winery)
• No term other than ESTATE BOTTLED may be used on a label to indicate combined growing and bottling conditions
