The 2006 Monte Sereno Syrah has an array of complex notes, aromas, and
flavors that can be enjoyed now, as it has had an optimal time of cellaring these past years.
On the nose, it showcases stewed black plums coupled with black olives and hints of leather.
From the first taste, it stuns with chocolate, cedar, and brambly red fruit. The mid-palate is rich
and coating and the finish offers a lingering sense of licorice and mocha to round out the wine.
At 2100 feet above sea level, the Monte Sereno Vineyard is located on the Western slopes of
High Valley. The soil type here is of the Franciscan complex, providing a gravelly clay loam
possessing very good drainage and slow permeability, causing the grapevines to struggle for
nutrients and water. This special site is planted to the Syrah Noir clone of the Syrah family,
whose origins would be from the Rhone valley in France.
At Brassfield Estate, our winemaking emphasizes quality and the use of traditional handcrafted
techniques, which create wines that have both power and finesse. During harvest we used
aerative pump overs and finished with extended maceration and heating of the must. After
sending wine to barrels, we allowed our wine to undergo malolactic fermentation naturally in
our caves. To showcase the fruit and structure of this wine, it was aged in 30% new French
oak barrels and 70% neutral French oak barrels for 20 months. The wine was stirred monthly
on its lees to achieve body and texture. This Monte Sereno Syrah was lightly fined, but bottled
