Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
The 2012 Monte Sereno Syrah has an array of complex notes, aromas and flavors that can be enjoyed now, or cellared for a number of years. On the nose, it showcases mocha coupled with brambly fruit, black currant, and a touch of vanilla toast. From the first taste, it stuns with red raspberry cobbler, cedar, and goji berries. The mid-palate is rich and coating while the finish offers a lingering sense of licorice, cocoa, and clove to round out the wine. Our highly elevated vineyards lend themselves particularly well to this varietal as it favors big swings in temperature, from warm days to very cool nights, allowing for great balance and natural acidity.
Vineyard Notes
At 2100 feet above sea level the Monte Sereno Vineyard is located on the Western slopes of High Valley. This special site is planted to the Syrah Noir clone, whose origins come from the Hermitage region of the Rhone Valley in France. The Noir clone is prone to providing rustic, spicy, and earthy components rich in tannin and concentrated in riper flavors.
Production Notes
At Brassfield Estate, our winemaking emphasizes quality and the use of traditional hand-crafted techniques, which create wines that have both power and finesse. During harvest we used aerative pump-overs and finished with extended maceration and heating of the must. After sending the wine to barrels it then undergoes malolactic fermentation naturally in our caves. To showcase the fruit and structure of this wine, it was aged in 30% new French oak barrels and 70% neutral French oak barrels for 20 months. The wine was stirred monthly on its lees to achieve body and texture. This Monte Sereno Syrah was lightly fined, but bottled without filtration.
