Our wines reflect the distinctiveness and diversity of their sites – from the elevated valley floor of High Serenity Ranch to the raw and remote Volcano Ridge Vineyard. Handcrafted by Winemaker Matt Hughes and Brassfield's winemaking team, our focus on sustainable farming, classic techniques, and purity of flavor produce fruit-driven, balanced, and delicious wines.
The 2015 Grenache hails from the volcanic soils and exposed aspect of our Volcano Ridge Vineyard on the extreme eastern border of the High Valley Appellation. From these porous soils the vines are forced to struggle to push energy and nutrients into the resulting fruit. A tour de force of spice and texture encased in black cherries, volcanic ash, and earthy goodness.
At 2000-2200 feet above sea level, the Volcano Ridge Vineyard is located on the steep slopes of an extinct cinder cone volcano better known as Round Mountain Volcano. The pure volcanic soils, or “tephra”, are extremely well-drained and are ideal for vine stress and restricting crop yields, resulting in concentrated and complex wines with opulent fruit flavors.
At Brassfield Estate, our winemaking emphasizes quality and the use of traditional handcrafted techniques, which create wines that have both power and finesse. Our Volcano Ridge Grenache was processed gently to create whole-berry fermentation. After a 3-day cold soak, the grapes underwent native yeast fermentation, creating more complex aromatics, richer flavors, and enhanced mouthfeel perception. After fermentation, we had an extended maceration on the must that gently extracted more color and flavor for the wine. The wine was then sent to 15% new French oak and 85% neutral French oak to undergo naturally occurring malolactic fermentation in barrel. The wine was stirred monthly on its lees to achieve body and texture. After 18 months in barrel, our 2015 Grenache was lightly fined and bottled without filtration.
Food Pairing Notes
The arch rival of boring Pinot Noir and the co-conspirator of a more extroverted Syrah this Grenache is perfect for a grilled steak salad or as a prequel to a night in the city with your muse.
